INDIVIDUAL SPONSORS...
Aloha KRC Members
The time is here for the Kailua Night Doubles and there is so much to know, we want to make sure you have all the info. This tournament has been running since 1970 as a Men’s Only event at the end of each summer. Then, a few decades ago, we added a Women’s Draw and ran that event in the Fall so we could draw the top college players from the local universities. About 10 years ago we added the Mixed Doubles draw and ran it simultaneously with the Women’s event.
Now, we will run all three events at the same time for the first time ever.
Beginning August 25th and running through September 9th, the courts of KRC will be closed at 430pm each afternoon to prepare for the matches. Match play will begin at 5pm nightly and usually runs right up until 10pm. It’s a wonderful sacrifice on behalf of our members to relinquish the courts for these weeks, and we hope to pay you back in the way of the most incredible tennis you’ll ever see in Hawaii.
This yearly tournament serves as a reunion of the Hawaii tennis family, connecting friends, partners, opponents, teammates, rivals, and loved ones. We are so honored and proud to have hosted them all right here at KRC for more than 50 years.
The Organizers
Since the dawn of the tournament, this event has been run through a collaborative between the KRC management and staff, with select KRC Members forming committees to handle certain aspects of it. This year the tournament director is your KRC Director of Tennis, Jared Carstenn. The financial director is your KRC Director of Operations, Connie Pate. Your KRC Facilities Manager, Sarah Barnes, oversees the physical transformation and daily upkeep of the club. KRC BOD Member Bryan Naff is this year’s tournament Chairperson.
The Title Sponsor
American Savings Bank has returned as our title sponsor. ASB has offered more support, personally and financially than ever before. Through our incredible KRC Member, Alan Fentriss, this relationship has grown rock solid over the years. ASB has shown steadfast dedication to community outreach through many local activities and events, and we are proud that they continue to work with us for the biggest tennis event that the Hawaii community has seen.
The BeerLast year, we were proud to introduce a new beer sponsor that was also fairly new to the Hawaii market as a whole. Broken Boundary Brewery and its founder, Chris Cook, worked seamlessly with us to make sure everyone was properly hydrated throughout the event. Now, with their popularity booming and the addition of a brand new name, Kalihi Beer is back! We will be serving ice cold IPAs, Kolschs, and Lagers from Kalihi Beer and Chris Cook through all the tournament nights!
The Court #10 Bar
It’s hard to think of Night Doubles without thinking about our bar. Your KRC Bar Manager, Jamie Wertz, and her crew will be here every night providing cold beers, delicious wine, specialty cocktails, soft drinks and of course ice cream every night!
The Food
The first Night Doubles experience for any kitchen staff can be daunting. It’s the biggest 2 weeks of the year for our chefs. Last year, in their first try, Honey Cafe hit an absolute winner! Chefs Trinh and Hisa stunned us with their food quality, quantity, and timeliness. They will be open every night providing the perfect meals for a night out at the club.
The Players
We are expecting a draw of 40 men's teams, 32 mixed teams, and 16 women's teams...
Kailua Night Doubles has always drawn the highest level players from around the state, and even from across the ocean. Every top local professional, college player, high school player, and league player will be striving for the trophy. This year we will see the return of half of last year’s championship duo, Azuma Visaya, who will join with his fellow teammate at UCLA and tournament newcomer, Emon Van Loben Sels. Former Women’s Night Doubles Champion and KRC Pro, Alyssa Tobita, will return to the event for the first time in five years when she left to pursue the pro tour. Former Hawaii Pacific University stand out and one of the winningest players in tournament history, Jan Axel Tribler is back! Current HPU coach and one of the only players to ever win Men’s Night Doubles with three different partners, Hendrik Bode, is back. This time he will partner with Michael Yani who was also part of two winning runs at night doubles after he retired from the ATP tour where he reached a ranking of top 150 in the world! Famously, a clip of Yani diving for a winner during the finals here at KRC ended up on Sportscenter Top 10 plays! We will also see the current top men’s and women’s teams from the University of Hawai, Hawaii Pacific University, and UH-Hilo. I could go on and on, but the level of players in this event is astounding!

The Prize Money
Thanks to our wonderful sponsors, we are able to offer $10,000 in prize money across the tournament. The winning team from each division will split $2000. The runner-up in each division will split $1000. And now, with the combining of all three tournaments, we will crown the King and Queen of Night Doubles. An extra $500 each will go to the man and woman in the draw who make it the farthest in the combined gender and mixed divisions. We expect to see most of our participants competing in two draws. This will be a fun new twist!
Parking, Courts, Club Usage
During the tournament, before 4:30pm each day, the club will operate as normal. At 4:30pm we will close the parking lot to everyone except for players and sponsors. At the same time the courts will only be open for tournament players to warm up. There are a few exceptions… There is no tournament play scheduled for the evenings of August 26th and 27th as well as September 2nd and 3rd. This is subject to change in event of weather postponements.
