BLUE MOON BUZZ Tueday July 22 by Bruce Nagel
Your one stop shop for wassup at this year's tournament!
Tonight the first round action continued and WOW what fun! History was made on a couple fronts! Here is a quick recap:
First, Title sponsor and tennis phenoms Rob Jaeckel and Tim Kelley, tied at 4-all in the third set from the previous night, came out breathing fire, breaking Quinn Saine, who has one of the most punishing serves in the tournament. Then Rob bravely held serve for a quick ending. KRC members advanced 6-1, 6-7(3), 6-4.
For perhaps the first time in tournament history, two brother teams not only took to the courts on one night, but WON!
First Scott and Jeff Grimmer, put on a flawless display defeating Tom Horiguchi and Shawn Morimoto 6-1, 6-0. Tom and Shawn are a really good team. Scott and Jeff just happened to play perfectly.
Then brothers Brett Krueger and Anthony Hatori took to the court. Anthony grew up in Kailua, and for a time taught here at the club before becoming Director of Tennis at a large club in Florida. Brett, with his "take the serve early and crush it back flat" approach, and Anthony with his touch and laser forehand, won 6-1, 6-2 over Roy Morigawara and Stanford Togashi.
Twelve year old Andrew Somerville, playing with his father, Director of Tennis at the Oahu Club, and four time KRC Night Doubles winner, defeated Blake Goodman and Aaron Kreitzer in a match that had everyone sitting on the edge of their seats. Andrew definitely held his own 6-2, 5-7, 7-5.
Of note, Blake attempted a shot that I have never seen before. It was amazing! Running down a deep lob at full speed, impact with the fence was imminent. He placed his foot 3 feet high on the chain link propelling himself upwards as he attempted a between the legs shot! It didn't work, but it is impressive to have the imagination to dream up such a shot. It could be the first time this shot has been attempted in the history of the universe.
Roman Kop, State High School Champion and a pro at the club teamed with doubles specialist Keven Wong to defeat the well known and personable team of Gordon Ako and Irwin Kahakui, and Leonard Loventhal and Matt Bittick were eliminated by a brutally tough Jireh Lin and Jason Perron.
