BLUE MOON BUZZ Wed July 23 by Bruce Nagel
Your one stop shop for wassup at this year's tournament!
Tonight, Wednesday, we advanced to the FINALS of the qualifying rounds. To keep the streak going we had rain. but not enough to keep us from playing all the matches! And play we did! KRC members are in bleen.
The evening began with KRC members Todd Hall and Kevin Peebles playing beautifully, defeating the tough team of Jason Chang and Nobu Takimoto. Todd and Kevin gel nicely as a team and it was reflected in their score, 6-1, 6-3.
Rob Jaeckel and Tim Kelley, took to Center Court for the third night in a row, but lost in the first of the finals of the Qualifying to phenom Gregg Takata and Aaron Yamato 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The match of the night though was the southern California team of Eddie Acuna and Doug Hoshaw taking on Ryan Trujillo and Marcus Pearman. The match began at 6pm sharp and the final ball was served at 10:20pm. OK, there was a 35 minute rain delay, but this was one epic slobberknocker. There must have been at least 30 clean winner lobs and the average number of shots per point hovered around 15. They went through three court monitors and two cases of water! They played 37 points in just the tie-breakers!
Serving, down match-point in the final set tie-break, Ryan framed his first serve. No one wanted to see it end with a double fault, least of all Ryan! Everyone was praying, oh please, don't double fault!!! But Ryan was smarter than that! He just powder-puffed his serve in and then proceeded to have a great point. It could have gone either way, but in the end, someone had to win. Eddie and Doug emerged victorious in a spectacular display of tennis, 7-6(7), 6-7(2), 7-6(5). Todd Hall said that this was the best qualifying match that he has ever seen.
