BLUE MOON BUZZ, FINALS NIGHT by Bruce Nagel
SATURDAY, August 2
At 3pm Olelo arrived with their van and gear to film the finals. They had a cool drone that they flew over the Tom Bowman Center Court. Betsy Somerville was the commentator. We'll let you know the air date.
The action began at 6pm with an 8 game pro-set for 3rd place and the $1,000 check. A close and super fun match to watch, Minh Le and Wei Yu Su defeated Hendrik Bode and Pierre Tafelski 9-7.
Before the finals, we presented the Sam Caldwell Amateur Athlete Award, which is given to that amateur who advances furthest in the tournament. It was awarded to Carter Lam and Marcel Chan Jr. The amateur team reached the quarter-finals, where they lost to the eventual Champions.
The Peter Isaak Sportsmanship Award was presented to HPU's Men's Head Tennis Coach, Hendrik Bode.
Ikaika and Dennis came out scorching hot, winning the first 5 games in 20 minutes. Dennis's groundstrokes were amazing. He hit the ball where he wanted, and he hit the ball hard. In the first set he may not have missed a return of serve. Ikaika closed the net with deceiving quickness and piercing volleys. Ikaika and Dennis won the first set 6-1.
After Mika and Jan's epic comeback Friday night in the semi-finals, many fans believed that they could do it again. And, for awhile, it looked like they might be right. Fighting for every point Mika and Jan grabbed the first 2 games of the second set.
But tonight, Ikaika and Dennis were the better team. They put on a beautiful doubles exhibition sweeping the next 6 of 7 games and winning the match, 6-1, 6-3. Jan and Mika were sports, and all four gentlemen were smiling when they stood at the net shaking hands.
#1 Ikaika Jobe / Dennis Lajola def. #2 Mika Maatta / Jan Tribler 6-1, 6-3.
The winners were presented with a $3,000 check, and the runner-ups $1,700.
By winning here tonight, Ikaika and Dennis also won the 2014 Triple Crown of Tennis in Hawaii beating out Hendrik Bode and Pierre Tafelski by one point! This earned them a $500 check from the USTA and a wild card berth into the Challenger next year on Maui.
We'll have one more follow-up BUZZ in a few days, but for now, many thanks to all our sponsors, members, players and fans. It was great that you could join us this past fortnight. Let's rest up and do it again!
